Summer Fun

It seems like July has flown by.  I don’t even know where the time has gone.  So many of the things I wanted to accomplish are still on my to do list.  John and I decided to make today, the last Saturday of July, a special day.  This morning, we each picked one thing we would like to do today and then we set out to do those things together.

I chose to ride our tandem bike to the Rose Garden.  John bought the bike for me last year and, until today, we had only rode around the block.  I really wanted us to go for a nice ride today.  We took the bike out of the garage and headed off.  It was a little bit scary, but we were able to figure out a way to get in sync with each other.  The Rose Garden is 1.3 miles from our house, so it was a really good first ride.

We relaxed in the Garden for a few minutes and then rode home.  2.6 miles round trip.  By the time we arrived at home, I thought that we really had the hang of it.  We broke the ice and I think that we will be going for lots more rides.  I love our tandem bike!

Next, we moved onto John’s activity for the day.  He wanted us to go to the beach.  We live about 5 miles from the beach, but we never go.  So, we drove to Lake Ontario and went to Ontario Beach Park.  Unfortunately, there was no swimming allowed there today, so we decided to try a different beach.  Our next stop was Durand Eastman Park, where there was plenty of sand and warm water and lifeguards.  We found a nice spot on the beach and spent a lovely afternoon enjoying the sun, sand and water.

It was a great way to say goodbye to July.  It has been a difficult month and I don’t mind seeing it go.  I am glad that John and I seized the opportunity to have some summer fun before July ends.

  1. It sounds like you both had an excellent, and very fun, day. I tried, that’s the key word, to ride a tandom bike with someone years ago, but it didn’t work out. As soon as I fell off, she decided it wasn’t worth it and sold the bike. Never mind that we had just purchased it only days before our first ride. This is the same thing that happened when I tried to ride a 3 wheeler. I couldn’t get over the bump in our driveway and probably fell off the bike. It was decided that I would never be able to ride it so it was immediately sold. I had no choice in the matter even though I tried to reason with the individual. She was hearing none of my reasons. I think she suspected I couldn’t do it because of my lack of balance. Since she has planted this seed in my head, I’m afraid to try any bike riding except stationary bikes. Kasey thinks I could ride a tandom bike, but what if I fall again? He’d be proven wrong, and the person whom I rode with years ago would be proven right.

    • Alexis, I also took a spill the first time John and I rode the tandem bike. It made me afraid to try for a long time. But, we got back on and managed to go for a nice ride with no accidents. I agree with Kasey that you could ride a tandem. I think the key might be to try with an experienced person on the front. I also think it’s really important to have the right size bike and to have really good communication with the other person. John and I have a lot to learn about riding the tandem and I am pretty sure we may have more spills, but for me the feeling of riding a bike was worth the risk.
