Tomorrow is Thursday and that means…vegetable share day! John and I joined the Good Food Collective last spring and, each Thursday, we go to the South Wedge Farmer’s Market and pick up our organic veggies (and sometimes a fruit bonus). As I wrote about in an earlier post , we hoped that joining the collective would encourage us to eat more veggies and maybe even try some foods we had never tasted.
We are on week 7 of our collective. We have received so much great food. Loads of lettuce, all kinds of leafy veggies like kale and swiss chard and beets, sweet corn, summer squash and zucchini, gorgeous cherry tomatoes, garlic and scallions and green peppers. Fruit has included blueberries and more blueberries, cherries, and delicious apricots. I loved the apricots, a fruit I had only ever tasted dried. Fresh apricots are wonderful!
We receive an email each week telling us which veggies will be waiting for us at the Farmer’s Market. This week, we will be picking up: lettuce, kale, tomatoes, scallions, cucumbers, broccoli, cabbage, summer squash, peaches, and herbs. Herbs? It will be interesting to see what herbs we get this week. So far, we have been given cilantro, basil, and dill.
I have to admit, we have wasted a bit of food. It has been hard to keep up with some veggies, especially all the lettuce. We have tried new recipes and had some delicious meals, desserts, and snacks. We have a batch of pickled beets pickling in the refrigerator. There are recipes on the Good Food Collective website, and I want to try to make Baked Kale Chips with our kale this week. We are really enjoying the way the veggies just keep on coming, week after week, fresh and healthy and tasty.
Joining the collective was a good decision. We have lots more weeks and lots more veggies to come.
