Today is the day

Today’s Gospel reading from Chapter 4 of Luke is one of my favorite Scripture passages.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

I love to read this passage and then imagine that it is ME that Jesus turns to and says:

“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

It gives me goosebumps every time!

I remember the words of an old friend, who once said to my husband and me, “If we REALLY believed this stuff, how would it change our lives?”

If I really believe this passage, really believe that Christ has fulfilled these beautiful words of Isaiah, how will it change my life?  What will it call me to do?  How will it call me to change?

Today and every day, Jesus has come to set me free.  I can live free from fear, free from worry, free from blindness and selfishness, free from addiction, free from both workaholism and laziness, free from consumerism and poverty of heart.

How would I live if I REALLY believed this?

Jesus has come to set us all free. How will we respond?

It gives me goosebumps…every time.
